When the nation’s largest single-campus medical school set out to renovate its facility, Wayne State focused on flexibility and technology to create a more modern, inviting program for students and the community.
The result is a new three-story, state-of-the-art education commons that both physically and programmatically connects the newly renovated library to the School of Medicine.
Efficient spaces
Both the library and commons are built around flexible spaces that provide unique learning experiences for students and staff to maximize the space built into the campus’ tight urban fabric. A flexible classroom frames the new front door of the School of Medicine. This highly collaborative learning environment is planned around a large open space with small breakout pods along the perimeter. Additional spaces include a clinical skills center with four simulation labs, student services, classrooms, collaborative study areas and a service desk, as well as administrative offices and related support functions.
The Shiffman Medical Library renovation provides state-of-the-art library facilities. The library underwent extensive renovations to improve its overall performance, efficiency and ease of use. New computer labs, a testing center, a clinical skills center and a medical simulation lab were added to the new library.
Efficient features
Sustainability was another key design focus and the university is seeking LEED Silver certification. Features include the use of energy-efficient HVAC equipment, CFC-free refrigerants, low-water-use plumbing fixtures and high-efficiency lighting. Zinc panels on the façade offer durability, longevity, low maintenance and an aesthetically pleasing accent to the facility. Window glazing celebrates the openness of the project and is found in a large curtain-wall window that floods the library’s reading room with natural light, along a connecting bridge that spans over a city street, and the entry corner which reaches in an upward motion, spanning all three floors, clearly signifying the school’s new spirit. |
