When Giddings ISD, an innovative small district in east Texas, set out to renovate an existing high school into a middle school, they set their sights higher than knocking down walls, upgrading a few systems and adding fresh paint. The district wanted to provide a technology-rich, 21st-century learning environment, while optimizing available space and resources. The solution was a renovated facility joined to a new high school which created a single campus for the district's 1,400 students in grades six through 12.
The design addresses long-term needs as well as immediate issues. As student populations continue to grow and the district passes future bonds, sixth through eighth graders will eventually be transferred to a new middle school facility, and the campus will accommodate ninth and tenth graders in the existing facility, using the new addition for upper classmen.
Connecting a community
SHW worked with the entire community to turn initial hesitation and concerns into rallying support, and delivered a facility that is considered to be an example for other school districts. A district centerpiece, the school was designed to meet the needs of the entire community, not just the student population. As such, it is open for community use during non-school hours, providing a venue for events like town hall meetings and theater productions.
Technology-rich campus
Not only does technology connect the school to the world, it also creates a smart, secure, energy-efficient facility. A central server which can be controlled remotely joins all components of the technology platform including computers, screens, projectors, security cameras, lighting and mechanical systems, and HVAC. This provides unique opportunities such as distance learning, energy savings and 24-hour remote security.
The technology-rich campus aims to accommodate the many different ways that students learn—by lecture, research, informal collaboration and outdoor learning—ensuring that all types of learners are meaningfully engaged with resources to help them succeed. Wireless access is provided throughout the campus, allowing for learning to continue outside of the classroom. |
