capturing the hearts and minds of our youngest learners For a four-year old, school can be a big, intimidating placeespecially for those spending time away from home for the first time. Research shows that when students begin the learning process early in life, and do so in an enjoyable way, it can pay big dividends later on. For that reason, Garland ISD wanted the Gloria Cisneros Pre-Kindergarten Center to be a part of its communitya child focused, non-institutional, fun place to learn.“As adults, we take things for granted,” says Garland
ISD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Culwell. “But a child’s
first reaction to their school’s environment can set a tone
for their entire education. If they are excited about school and
learning, they’re bound to be more successful. This design
demonstrates how a design firm can successfully capture the hearts
and minds of students.”
inspiration close to home
Project Designer Christian Owens unexpectedly found inspiration one
evening at home. “I was playing on the floor with my 4-year-old
nephew when I realized that he was my client. Garland’s new
learning center was all about being 4 years old. I needed a new
perspective into scale, color, and their spirit of discovery—all
while working to create a comfortable and safe environment for
learning.”
the solution Upon arrival, children are greeted by a series of bright little red schoolhouses. Large numbers and letters decorate the fence around the playground and bright colors inside lead eager learners to the next activity. Technology is plentiful. Indoor and outdoor play areas are designed to entertain the school’s energetic students regardless of the weather. And since the world does look different through the eyes of a 4 year old, doors, windows and furniture throughout the building are scaled down to their size.
And all this effort has a single purpose: building confidence today
so that its students have a strong foundation for academic habits
down-the-road.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better response from the kids and their parents. We see it every time we stop by a classroom and see the students engaged, curious and learningor as they proudly ‘discover’ their way to lunch. It has been such a gift to know we’re making a difference in the lives of these children," says Principal Dee Salinas.
